Heavenly Contracts by David Bird
In 1978 – before Heavenly Contracts was written, David Bird’s first story of the bridge-crazy monks of St Titus appeared in Bridge Magazine. The series proved immensely popular and has run to this day. The tales appear regularly in many magazines around the world and have been translated into several languages.
In this ninth collection, the pompous and self-important Abbot hosts the annual St Francis of Assisi Swiss teams for monastic establishments. Hilarious encounters ensue against a team of monks from Southern Germany and some equally incomprehensible friars from Scotland. The show-down comes in a final match against their old rivals, the nuns of St Hilda’s. In another story the monastery cardroom is being redecorated and the monks play out of doors, in the cloisters. As the light begins to fade, the Abbot is distressed to see some novices seeking unfair advantage by using pen-light torches.
Regular followers of David Bird’s work will know what to expect – a first-rate mixture of excellent bridge, entertaining characters and sparkling dialogue.
Paperback. 160 pages.
